Africa’s First Regenerative Farming Programme to Receive Verra Certified Carbon Credits

Our pioneering carbon farming programme, has achieved a major milestone, becoming the first carbon farming initiative in Africa to achieve registration and carbon credit issuance under Verra’s VM0042 Agricultural Land Management methodology.

The Impact of Carbon Credit Issuance

For Our Farmers

Creates revenue through carbon credits, rewarding sustainable practices that improve soil, boost biodiversity, and enhance climate resilience. Regenerative methods increase yields, cut costs, and secure long-term profitability.

For Our Carbon
Credit Buyers

Provides assurance that credits meet the highest standards of quality and integrity, enabling companies to confidently demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate change responsibly.

For Regenerative Agriculture

Supports a sustainable business model where farming practices actively reduce carbon emissions while enhancing food production, strengthening rural economies, and improving soil health for future generations.

“We launched AgriCarbon in 2021, and, as the first VM0042 project listed with Verra, it was the first soil carbon model to be independently validated for Southern Africa. From day one, our aspiration was to change the approach to regenerative farming, and we are proud that Anthesis has played a pivotal role in driving it forward.”

The programme

AgriCarbon empowers farmers to embrace regenerative practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage, and diverse crop rotations. These methods improve soil health, increase productivity, and turn farmland into carbon sinks—capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere and helping to combat climate change.

The journey to get here

AgriCarbon’s success comes from a strong Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification system that ensures transparent and accurate carbon tracking. This was made possible through partnerships with Trace & Save and Intelact, experts in agricultural consulting.

The entire process was independently validated and verified by third party auditor SCS Global, one of the world’s leading environmental verification firms. The soil carbon model was independently assessed by the Nutrient Management Institute (NMI) at the University of Wageningen in
the Netherlands.

When AgriCarbon approached us in 2021 with a vision for a pilot project, we saw an opportunity to support independent, science-based sustainable agriculture across South Africa. The journey to issuance has been long but rewarding, filled with valuable learnings. Reaching this milestone means our farmers can now generate carbon credits, rewarding their dedication to sustainable farming practices.

What's next for AgriCarbon?

AgriCarbon is committed to expanding its impact, helping more farmers worldwide participate in carbon markets and contribute to climate action. The programme will continue providing farmers with technical support, training, and tools to maximise carbon sequestration and enhance climate resilience.

“As the programme scales, we invite farmers, partners, and businesses to join AgriCarbon on this journey to create meaningful impact. Together, we can cultivate a future where every crop nurtures the planet.”
